SAFETY FOOTWEAR: STANDARDS, MAINTENANCE, AND MISCONCEPTIONS

Safety footwear is crucial in many workplaces, and understanding its standards, maintenance, and dispelling misconceptions are essential.

### Standards
Two important safety footwear standards are derived from EN ISO 20345:2010, which provides general requirements and test methods for protective footwear for plant personnel. The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) developed this standard to offer guidance on specifying, testing, and verifying protective footwear. In terms of slip – resistance, the ASTM F2913 – 19 standard is significant. It is a test method for measuring the coefficient of friction between footwear and work surfaces using a whole – shoe tester. This test evaluates slip performance on various types of flooring and in the presence of surface contaminants like oil, ice, and water. In the US, although there are no overall performance standards for slip resistance, employers interested in a standardized assessment can inquire if an overshoe’s coefficient of friction has been tested under ASTM F2913 – 19.

### Maintenance
Proper maintenance of safety footwear extends its lifespan and ensures its effectiveness. If your work shoes get wet, fully undo them and stuff them with paper. Let them dry slowly, and replace the wet paper as needed until the shoes are completely dry. Employers also play a key role in maintenance. They must ensure that employees know how to use their personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety footwear, properly before starting work with dangerous substances or equipment. Regular inspections (such as monthly) are necessary, and damaged or non – functioning PPE should be replaced immediately.

### Misconceptions
There are several misconceptions about safety footwear. Many users have questions about shoe disintegration and when to buy new safety shoes. Clearing up these misconceptions helps employees find the perfect – fitting safety shoes that suit their jobs and last a long time. After all, safety shoes should be reliable, especially on tough workdays. By understanding the standards, following proper maintenance procedures, and dispelling misconceptions, both employers and employees can make the most of safety footwear in the workplace.
